Kashif Karim

Education Coordinator: Aga Khan University, Pakistan

“What we are doing is preparing them for life beyond the university. They are monitored, they are cross checked and the system of academic integrity is well oriented in the Aga Khan University. So, they are learning the tactics of how to maintain the academic integrity quorum.”

During the past years, Kashif has undertaken the formidable task of integrating Turnitin into the Aga Khan University’s Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, and Postgraduate Residency Programs. AKU, an international university, has campuses and training programs in Pakistan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, the United Kingdom and Afghanistan. In doing so, he has had to overcome many challenges, not least the basic day-to-day social and technological hurdles posed by the region in which he lives. In addition he has had to persuade the university management and his fellow colleagues of the benefits of using the software. The use of Turnitin, along with supporting policies and systems and standards, is now well-embedded within the curriculum and there is an institutional commitment to academic integrity and academic writing as a foundation for future studies. Kashif comments:

The institution maintains its reputation for high quality, scholarly research by using Turnitin to help students “learn the tactics of medical writing”.
